Overload Clutches

Rotaro overload clutches (or torque limiters) are essential safety devices designed to be installed directly on the cardan shafts of agricultural machines particularly exposed to torque spikes. These components act as an automatic disengagement mechanism: when the transmitted torsional force exceeds a preset limit, the clutch slips or temporarily disconnects the transmission. This critically protects the internal components of the implement and the tractor from costly damage such as broken gears, chains, or axles. We offer a full range of Rotaro clutches, including pawl, friction disc, or shear bolt versions, to suit every type of implement (balers, shredders, ploughs). Invest in the safety and longevity of your machinery with an original Rotaro overload clutch.

  • Freewheel Clutch

The Rotaro freewheel clutch is an indispensable safety device, specifically designed to protect the tractor's transmission and implement from the effects of inertia. This clutch, essential on machines with high rotating masses (such as heavy shredders or mowers), allows the implement to continue rotating freely and decelerate gradually once the tractor's Power Take-Off (PTO) is disengaged. Without a Rotaro freewheel clutch, the inertia would cause a destructive "kickback" on the transmission. Choosing an original Rotaro component guarantees the correct calibration and mechanical resistance needed to absorb these loads, preventing costly failures and increasing operational safety.

  • Friction Disc Clutch

The Rotaro friction disc clutch is the most common and versatile torque limiter for protecting agricultural cardan shafts. It operates using a disc pack (typically made of ferrous and non-ferrous material) which, clamped by springs, transmits power through friction. When the implement encounters excessive resistance and the torque load exceeds the preset value, the discs slip, immediately interrupting the transmission of harmful forces to the tractor and the implement. This continuous slippage mechanism makes it ideal for machines working in variable conditions that require constant protection from momentary overloads. Choosing an original Rotaro friction disc clutch guarantees precise calibration and maximum durability of the disc pack.

  • Pawl Limiter

The Rotaro pawl limiter (or pawl clutch) is a high-precision mechanical safety device, essential for protecting cardan shafts and implements subject to extreme and sudden torque spikes. Unlike disc clutches, this limiter ensures a total and immediate disengagement of the transmission when the preset load is exceeded, by disengaging the pawls (balls or rollers) from their seat. It is the ideal system for machines that work intermittently or with heavy impacts, such as heavy rotary tillers and seed drills. The Rotaro pawl limiter automatically re-engages once the overload has ceased and the implement slows down, ensuring the machine can immediately resume work.

  • Shear Bolt Clutch

The Rotaro shear bolt clutch is the simplest and safest torque limiter for protecting cardan shafts and agricultural machinery from catastrophic damage. This device uses a calibrated bolt as a safety element: when the transmitted load exceeds the maximum permitted limit, the bolt shears instantly. This completely disconnects the transmission, protecting the tractor and implement from mechanical failure. It is the ideal solution for equipment that must not suffer any slippage, such as certain types of ploughs or seed drills, and requires absolute protection. Although it requires bolt replacement after activation, the cost of the replacement part is minimal compared to the damage it prevents.
