In short
- Q3 2026 in Italy: tractors -13.8%, combine harvesters -37.5%
- January-September: 12,290 tractors registered, -3.3%
- Tractor sales are also down in the US, France, Germany, Turkey and Brazil
- In Italy, used machines outnumber new ones roughly three to one
On 13 October, at the presentation of EIMA International in Rome, FederUnacoma, the Italian agricultural machinery manufacturers' association, released the latest registration figures for Italy, based on Ministry of Transport records. The picture: a sharp slowdown in the third quarter, after a recovery in 2025 and a positive start to 2026. Italy is one of Europe's largest tractor markets, so the trend is worth watching beyond its borders.

From the 2024 low to the 2025 rebound
2024 marked a recent low for Italy, with 15,450 tractors registered. In 2025 registrations rose to 17,573 (+13.7%), with most of the recovery in the second half of the year. The recent peak remains 2021, with 24,387 units: 2025 was still around 28% below that level.
Why the market is slowing, and not only in Italy
According to FederUnacoma, the main factors are geopolitical instability, the return of inflation, rising production costs and the extreme weather of late spring and summer, which have squeezed farm incomes. The slowdown is international: tractor sales have also fallen in the United States, France, Germany, Turkey and Brazil.
EIMA 2026: the industry's barometer
EIMA International, held in Bologna from 10 to 14 November 2026, brings together more than 1,800 exhibitors, around 60,000 models and visitors from 150 countries. It is where manufacturers, dealers and farmers will take the measure of demand for 2027.
Fewer new tractors, longer working lives
When fewer new machines are bought, the existing fleet works longer. In Italy the used market is around three times larger than the new one in number of machines, which keeps the average fleet age high. For farms and contractors, maintenance becomes an economic decision: a breakdown in the middle of the season costs far more than the part that would have prevented it.
- Il peso dell'usato.
Il mercato dell'usato pesa in numeri circa tre volte quello del nuovo e contribuisce all'invecchiamento del parco macchine.
